Student Assessmentof the project: Cureton Elementary Fourth Graders student feedback on the project:
"We learned how to animate and record just like in the movies" " I learned that there was history right here in San Jose" " They had farmers just like where I grew up" "Some were poor and not allowed to go where they wanted to" " I liked working with the clay" " really liked digging for the artifacts that were used by someone else" " It burned down many times until a brick wall was built" " The drums made you feel the animation better"
Several of the students were surprised by the information they learned by watching their final class created movie. Even though they had watched the documentary Home Base, read the books Coolies and Brothers, conducted the dig simulation and listened to readings from Chinese Historical and Cultural Project curriculum, it was not until they viewed the final animation that the content of their investigation impressed them emotionally.
Students were assessed on the clarity and accuracy of their stories. Students reviewed each other animation work in groups of three as they created the animations and animation tests were previewed by the students prior to the second day of filming.
